This Chalmers bachelor thesis investigates the chemical atmospheres found inside sea-freight shipping containers. Drawing on the published literature and on operational gas-measurement records from a Dutch container-survey company (Gasmeetstation Nederland), the authors identify, categorise, and compare the volatile organic compounds detected at the moment containers are first opened. They examine the relative contribution of intentional fumigation versus natural off-gassing from packaged goods during long sea voyages. The dataset shows that approximately 30% of inspected containers contained elevated concentrations of one or more potentially toxic or carcinogenic compounds, and that the majority of these compounds were emitted in-transit by the cargo itself rather than introduced by pre-shipment fumigation. The work argues for routine, speciated gas analysis at port-of-arrival rather than reliance on fumigation manifests alone.
